Kyllex is a young musician who has touched base on many different aspects of the music industry - as a producer, a singer, an arranger and a composer.
The voice behind the title track for the television drama series Yizo Yizo is what you would call a complete musician. He is also the mastermind behind the breezy number called Heavenly. Kyllex is a brilliant producer known for his genius in bringing out the best in artists. From these credits, there's no point in arguing against the sentiment that he is one of South Africa's foremost multi-talented artists. "I decided when I was 15 years old that whatever I was going to do, it had to be something that I enjoyed thoroughly," says the young artist.
"One thing I knew was that I was going to follow a specific direction, and that was a musical career. I follow my dreams, my aspirations." The teenage Kyllex started making demos in his spare time. Support came from an unexpected source. During a routine medical check-up, his doctor asked him what he wanted to do with his life. "I told him in no uncertain terms that I wanted to be a musician, " Kyllex explains.
"Later I went back to Dr Bopoalamo to play him some of my demos. He was so impressed that he pledged financial support for me. I saw my dreams unfold into reality because I was now able to buy a keyboard." Determined to make the grade, he taught himself how to play the keyboard, practising diligently until he mastered it. During this period Kyllex formed a group called RC Jam. Its members included fellow Daveyton teens Lebo Mathosa ad Queen of Arthur All Stars. "Throughout this period I kept creating demos and shopping them around. It paid off in 1998 when I joined Ghetto Ruff as a producer but I was persuaded to record and release an album of my own."
Shortly after this Kyllex was charged with creating a track for Yizo Yizo. The song went on blasting the charts and is as popular as the series itself. Not one to be content with resting on his laurels, Kyllex turned his attention to his next project, a house album called Ghetto House Beats which ended up winning a FNB Sama award in the best house catergory.
'Making music is almost like having a baby. You go through the ups and downs of "pregnancy" while trying to create the music, and the end product is something you love whole-heartedly even if it is not a hit. What's important in this business to always be happy with what you have created and to love your music, regardless of how it does in the market.
Kyllex's album Jemza House Beats is sure to do well in the market place. It has those flavoured beats and melodies that etch deep into your soul and Kyllex gives his fans an unexpected treat in a track titled This is my life
